The tool factors in characteristics like shade, roof orientation, historical weather patterns in the area, and annual sun positions to provide users an analysis of whether solar panels might be a good idea for the home. The tool also calculates potential net savings from using solar.

After users receive the report, they then receive a list of Google recommended solar panel companies nearby.

Project Sunroof currently offers solar-readiness details in addresses of 42 states. Google plans to expand to the remaining states in the future.
